Hurricane Ike

Image

Sep 13th,  2008 - For the last few days there Hurriance Ike has been on the news. The hurricane was expected to hit the state of Texas on Saturday morning. This hurricane was considered to be very strong and many people had been evacuated from the homes in advance of the hurricane hitting the shore. Ike is also expected to hit Dallas but maybe not with a lot of intensty.

When we woke up this morning, Ike had already hit the lower part of the state and created a lot of damage in Galveston and Houston. The island of Galveston was heavily flooded and many people had lost their homes. In Houston too, many people lost power, their homes and the situation was very bad. We knew that Ike would hit Dallas in the evening and so we went out and got our groceries in the morning. The stores were vey crowded as there were others like us who were also worried that Ike may cause some problems. We bought our groceries and headed back home.

The entire day has been very gloomy and windy but so far there are no signs of strong winds near where we live. Hopefully Ike will not come here. I hope everything gets back to normal for others who have been affected by this hurricane.

Ganpati Bappa at the Irving Hindu Temple

Image

Sep 7th,  2008 - Since the Ganesha festival is on, my parents wanted to visit the Irving Hindu Temple. Today was also my grandfather's birthday and so we decided that it was a good reason to visit the temple. We reached the temple around 11:00 AM and it was very crowded, there was no place to park at the temple. Luckily my Dad managed to find a spot. Inside the temple, there was a lot of crowd and everyone was singing. It was very colorful too. Luckily the main ceremony had not started and we were able to go to the different gods and offer our prayers.

Once we done, the main ceremony started. There was a small pooja and then the Lord Ganesha was taken for the "Visarjan" ceremony. The statue of Lord Ganesha was carried on a cart and it made its way outside the temple with many people following the cart and chanting "Ganpati Bappa Moriya". After the ceremony was completed, we came home and had a quiet Sunday at home.

Happy Birthday Ajja

Image

Sep 4th,  2008 - Today is my Ajja's (mother's dad) birthday. He is in India and so all I could do was wish him over the phone. Have anice day Ajja.  It was  typical day for me, I woek up in the morning and went to school. I like going to school a lot. There are some days when I don't want to come back when my mom picks me up. I usually have a play-date on Thursdays with some of the other kids in the school. At around 4 in the afternoon, my mother took me to the Andrew Brown Community Park in Coppell. It was a very big park and I had a lot of fun. There is a choo-choo train in the park.

I like these play dates because I get to play with my friends. Looking forward to my next playdate.

Ganpati Bappa Moriya

Sep 3rd,  2008 - This week marks the start of the Ganpati festival and we are also celebrating the festival here. My mother has prepared some festival food and also doing some special poojas at home. I like the Sheera that she had prepared, it was really nice. I was walking around saying "I want more Sheera". In India, my granparents have gone to their hometown of Karwar to celebrate Ganpati this year. Many family members come here for this occasion.

I wish we could have all been in India. That would have been a lot of fun. Maybe next year.

Happy Halloween

Image

Oct 31st,  2008 - Today is 31st October and its Halloween here in the US. Its the day when everyone will dress in strange costumes and have a lot of fun throughout the day. Our school also celebrates Halloween and we were all asked to come to school in our costumes. My parents had bought the pirate outfit for me and I went to school as a pirate. My other classmates had also come in their costume. Ria was a friendly witch (I called her Hat), Manav was a dinosaur, Khushi was a butterfly and Amey was Spiderman.

We had a lot of fun in school, ate some candy and at the end of the day, Ms Humeira gave us a goody bag with lots of small things like stickers, bubbles, erasers, coloring pencils. What a great way to end the month.

In the evening, we will go trick or treating.
