Nov 14th, 2006 - Today is November 14th which is celebrated as Children's Day in India. This is also Jawaharlal Nehru's birthday and he loved children which is why its Children's  Day. I have not had much of a Children's day so far. Seems like I have caught some kind of mild fever and I throw up my food once in a while. I was unwell for most of the night and kept waking up and crying. I seemed to be getting better as the day has progressed.

By the end of the day I was much better. I threw up one last time at around 8 PM,
had some milk and fell fast asleep. Oh well, guess I cannot handle the air
in Mumbai too well. :-(

Oct 13th, 2006 -  Its my first week in Mumbai and I started the day with a good sleep. I slept until 7 AM and my parents were also happy. Looks like my jetlag is gone. I spent most of the day playing in the living room. I met Doris and Philomena today and they gave them a big smile which made them very happy.

In the evening, we went to the InOrbit Mall in Malad. This is one of the most popular malls in Mumbai and is built to international standards. The ground floor has some general stores while most of the first floor is dedicated to  clothes. There are many designer clothing stores like Sheetal, Wills Fashion,  Biba, Provogue etc. There is a small section dedicated to children's clothing too. The third floor is the food court. There are plenty of eating options starting from South Indian to North India, Chinese, American and my father's favorite food, the Tibbs Frankie. My father had 2 Mutton frankies. He was reminiscing the times when he used to pay Rs 7 for it and how it now costs Rs 35. It will probably
cost Rs 100 by the time I grow up.

I did not have a good time though, I felt sick for some reason and threw up quite
a lot. I still don't know why I feel sick. Maybe its something in the air. Hope
I feel better tomorrow.

Ponthi Vaath

E-mail Print PDF

Nov 9th, 2006 - My great-grandmother waited patiently for about 5 hours in order to perform the Ponti Vaath function. The literal translation of the term Ponti Vaath is seeing the great grandchild under the light of a sacred flame. My uncle had arranged for  a small function for our very close family so most of my grandmother's cousins and their children had come to attend. A Hindu priest commenced the function by first creating darkness in the room and then he recited some sacred chants. Once that was completed, he put a cloth in front of my great grandmother so that she could not see me. My mother brought me out without any clothes, apparently that is how its to be done. I did not seem to care much even though there were 25 people watching my strip-tease.

My first flight on Kingfisher Airlines

E-mail Print PDF

Image  Nov 9th, 2006 -  Today I am going to Hyderabad, which is the city where my father's side of the family lives. My great-grandmother, yes great-grandmother, lives there and is longing to see me. My seeing her was one of the biggest reasons we came to India. I was up early at 5 AM and so we were able to go to the airport well in time. My father had booked the tickets on Kingfisher Airlines, which is one of the new low cost airlines in India. My parents were surprised that there was no baggage allowance for babies, but the nice lady waived the excedd baggage fee. The flight was nice and smooth and I seemed to have a good time on the flight. I did not fall asleep and was very excited during the flight.

My grandmother's brother (so technically my grandfather) Kamanu-ajja
had come to receive us at the airport. Their home is very close to the airport
and we reached home in a few minutes. Although my grandmother wanted to see me, she
cannot see me right away because a certain function had to be completed before she can
see me. The function was at 5 PM and we reached at noon, so she and I sat in separate
rooms till the function.

Learning to Crawl

Nov 8th, 2006  - Looks like I am getting used to the Indian Standard Time (IST) (it does not mean that I will be late). I woke up at around 7 AM and spent the day doing masti. I  have started crawling today. There is plenty of space in the house and I have slowly started crawling.

In the evening, my father's friend Amiya came to visit me. He bought me this big softtoy dog, called ChiChi. I was more interested in playing with the gift-wrap than play with the toy. I am sure eventually I will like the toy. Also, later in the evening, my father's friend Parag's wife Laaj came to visit us. She came to Bangalore for some training and stopped over to visit us. Unfortunately, I fell asleep by the time she came so I could not play with her. I will probably play with her when I get to Mumbai. Tomorrow morning, I will be going to visit my great grandmother in Hyderabad.

A quiet day at home

Nov 7th, 2006 - Seems like my body is somewhere between the Pacific Time Zone and Singapore. I was up early once again at around 4 AM. As usual, I started kicking my legs and woke my parents up. I had my early morning feed and started my masti. For some reason, I was in a really good mood early and I was screaming and kicking my legs all morning. I took a few short naps during the day. After the long flights and the hectic journey, it was nice and relaxing day at home with my parents and my grandmother.

In the morning, I met Mr and Mrs Miranda who are my grandmother's neighbor.

Jetlag

Image Nov 6th, 2006 - My body clock has still not adjusted to the local time. I slept at 1 AM and was up by 5 AM and forced my parents to wake up as well. My mother gave me mild, changed my diapers and I was full form. Since this is the first time my grandmother has seen me  since I was about a month old, she spent a lot of time playing with me. She has a big living room with lots of wide space for me to run around and play. I seemed to  have a good time. The excitement was evident as I kept kicking my legs all day. My excitement seemed to wane as the day worn on and I was sleepy by around 8 PM. I got cranky and fell fast asleep. So far, my trip has been good and I have not fallen sick or become very  cranky. Lets hope the rest of my trip remains the same.

People I met today
- Mrs and Mrs Rupani and their daughter, Iccha.

Nov 5th, 2006 - We left for the airport at around 5:30. The cab ride took us about 20 minutes. Once we reached the airport, we realized that the flight time had changed to an hour earlier. Luckily we had plenty of time. We went through immigration, went throughsecurity check and boarded the flight. The person who was boarding the flight did a poor job of it and did not pre-board families who had babies. Anyway, I had a  special seat once again with the  bassinet. Once the flight took off, I promptly fell asleep. The flight was fairly smooth but I had some pain in my ears when the flight descended into Bangalore.

Goodbye Singapore

E-mail Print PDF

Nov 5th, 2006 - Its Sunday morning, the day when we will be going to India. We woke up early and decided to go out to have breakfast. We went to Swensens for breakfast. As usual,  my parents got me a high-chair and a straw and that kept me entertained for quite a while. After breakfast, we went back to the hotel, took a shower and headed back to Orchard Road. We went to the different shopping malls there like Takashimaya, Scotts Plaza etc. We finally had lunch at a restaurant called Nooch. The menu at the restaurant was as thick as a book with options from Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Singaporean cuisine. My parents decided to eat some Thai cuisine and they enjoyed the food. After that we went back to the hotel room to relax before taking the flight to India.

Tastes of Singapore

E-mail Print PDF

Image Nov 4th, 2006 - After seeing Images of Singapore, we had lunch at the restaurant called Tastes of Singapore.  The restaurant is attached to the musuem and offers a sampling of typical Singaporean food. The menu included dishes like Tandoori Chicken, Laksa, Nasi Lemak, Soft Shell Crabs etc. It was a nice looking restaurant. My parents got me a high-chair and a straw and  I played with it till they finished their lunch. Looks like they have found a new formula  to keep me shut. They give me a little straw and I play with it for a while.

Images of Singapore

E-mail Print PDF

Image Nov 4th, 2006 - The two major attractions at Sentosa Island are probably the Images of Singapore and the Aquarium. Images of  Singapore is a musuem that has wax exhibits that walks  visitors through the history of Singapore from its inception to modern day. Singapore consists mainly of 4 races, the Chinese, the Malays, Indians and Europeans. The exhibits highlight some of the key traditions of these different races. The main theme is that people of different races can co-exist in harmony. It took us about an hour to go  through this exhibit. I fell asleep for a little while and missed out a few. Luckily  my parents took plenty of pictures.
